Recursion is one of the canonical AI drug discovery businesses. Founded in 2013 by Chris Gibson, Blake Borgeson, & Dean Y. Li, MD, PhD (now president of Merck RLs), the company spun out of the University of Utah to industrialize drug development.
The company’s platform is centered around image analysis of cellular models. By making images as computable as the genome (capturing >1000 features), Recursion has a morphological atlas for an increasing number of diseases & compounds/MoAs.
Recursion first built the infrastructure to generate large amounts of unbiased biological data. Their pipeline focused on rare diseases like CCM initially & has expanded to oncology. Overall, there are thousands of rare, genetic diseases that affect >20M patients in the US alone.
Recursion is a modern-day Millennium Pharmaceuticals, using its platform to get increasingly better partnerships overtime with Sanofi & now Genentech.
